The CAOMPOM represents specialists engaged in the practice of the individual aspects of oral and maxillofacial pathology and oral medicine. Our mission is the general well-being of all individuals through improved oral health, and is the foundation upon which our specific goals are based: 1) to lead our profession in advancing the science of oral medicine and pathology, 2) to raise awareness of the importance of this science among other oral professionals, and 3) to encourage interest in a career in our specialty among dental students.
Oral Medicine focuses on nonsurgical management of oral diseases including the management of oral mucosal and salivary gland diseases; (2) temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain; (3) oral complications of systemic disease; and (4) dental management of medically complex patients within its scope of practice
Oral Pathology focuses on the identification and management of diseases of the oral and maxillofacial regions through microscopic, clinical, biochemical or other forms of examination. Oral Pathology includes histopathologic analysis of tissue samples, the investigation of causes and effects of diseases
